Final grade calculator

Find out exactly what you need on your final exam to get the grade you want. Enter three numbers, and the table shows what you'd need for every letter grade.

106%

More than 100%, so 90% isn't reachable with the final alone. Ask about extra credit or retakes.

How it works

Your final grade is a mix of what you have now and the final exam. If the final is worth 20%, your current grade counts for the other 80%.

So the score you need is: (goal minus current times 0.8) divided by 0.2. With an 86% now and a goal of 90%, that's (90 minus 68.8) divided by 0.2, which is 106%. That goal is out of reach with the final alone, but an 87% is very doable.

This assumes your current grade is already weighted the way your teacher calculates it. If your class uses categories like tests and homework, work out your current grade with the grade calculator first.

Questions

How do I calculate what I need on my final?

Subtract your current grade times the share of the grade that isn't the final from your goal, then divide by the final's weight. For a final worth 25% with an 82% now and a goal of 85%: (85 minus 82 times 0.75) divided by 0.25 = 94%.

What if I need more than 100%?

Then that grade isn't reachable with the final alone. Look at the next grade down in the table, and ask your teacher about extra credit, retakes, or dropped scores.

Where do I find how much the final is worth?

Your syllabus usually lists it. Common weights are 10% to 25% in high school and 20% to 40% in college.

Does this work for college classes?

Yes. The math is the same for any class where the final is a fixed percentage of the grade.
